Adelaide Film Festival announces eight encore screenings

Not ready to say goodbye to the Adelaide Film Festival just yet? Some of Festival’s most popular and sold-out films are screening one last time as part of our Encore program.

The eight encore screenings start on Saturday (October 28) and run through to Wednesday November 1.

They are:

Poor Things 

Yorgos Lanthimos / United Kingdom

From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

Isla’s Way

Formidable grandmother Isla Roberts is adamant. She insists that although she’s not a lesbian, her girlfriend Susan is. In this tender, richly humorous portrait of an 87-year-old horse carriage driving champion, we learn what makes an ordinary life extraordinary.

Monster

Hirokazu Kore-eda / Japan

Hirokazu Kore-eda is one of the greatest directors alive – his films are always must-see and Monster is no exception. Minato (Soya Kurokawa), a young boy, alarms his widowed mother by beginning to act in a strange and self-destructive way, and it appears his teacher has a case to answer for bullying him. Gossip and inference quickly become accepted as fact, and institutions cover themselves by empty acts of apology. But things are not as simple as they seem at first.

A screenwriter drawn back to his childhood home enters into a fledgling relationship with a mysterious neighbour as he then discovers his parents appear to be living just as they were on the day they died, 30 years before.

Anatomy of a Fall

Justine Triet / France

Justine Triet gives us an absorbing courtroom drama. Sandra, a successful novelist, faces trial after her husband, Samuel, falls to his death from the balcony of their chalet in the French Alps. Did he throw himself or did Sandra dispatch him? Their young vision-impaired son is the only witness, and the dynamic of the family members will form the core of the investigation. This is a truly superior crime story in that the protagonists are all intelligent and articulate.

Perfect Days

Wim Wenders / Germany, Japan

Veteran German auteur Wim Wenders makes a serene return to form in this story of a Tokyo toilet cleaner. Hirayama (Kōji Yakusho, Best Actor, Cannes) rises each morning and follows a routine marked by its sameness and calm silence: water the plants, work, the public bath, the same dinner. For those who watch closely, the miracle of each day is that it has a way of surprising you with its subtle differences.

The Royal Hotel

Having the time of their lives, Americans Hanna (Julia Garner) and Liv (Jessica Henwick) are best friends backpacking in Australia. After they run out of money, Liv, looking for an adventure, convinces Hanna to take a temporary live-in job behind the bar of a pub called ‘The Royal Hotel’ in a remote Outback mining town. Bar owner Billy (Hugo Weaving) and a host of locals give the girls a riotous introduction to Down Under drinking culture but soon Hanna and Liv find themselves trapped in an unnerving situation that grows rapidly out of their control.
